"I believe in taking a hands-on approach to training. I find that this opens the way for trainees to ask questions and encourages a safe environment for them to try something and not be afraid of failing. All my workshops have techniques that can be adapted and used in a salon situation. Because I run a successful salon, I find that my trainees and business owners that I coach are more open with the problems they face. This creates a great platform to work from."
Niq James - Headspace Artist Director

Niq James was awarded the inaugural Hairdressing Industry Training Organisation (HITO) Trainer of the Year for 2011, this prestigious award gives recognition to exceptional industry knowledge, training characteristics and personal achievements.

He worked intensively with Laura Simpson, New Zealand's WorldSkills competitor in London this year, and has been the driving force in bringing WorldSkills to New Zealand. He represented New Zealand as one of the WorldSkills judges in London. Niq believes the world skills competitions "can take our industry to new heights, so let's make an interest in their future."

education testimonial

"Niq is an inspirational trainer who excels in all areas of training and education. He is passionate about passing on his expertise to others, and this is especially apparent when you see him in a training environment.

Niq covers all education levels with ease, from educating young stylists on elementary forms of hairdressing to working with experienced hairdressers on advanced techniques and skills.

In my capacity as a Technical Educator for Wella NZ, I have had the privilege of seeing Niq train in his salon as well as in seminar format. Whether in a large group or training with a staff member he always has a good rapport with his students and is able to adapt to accommodate their learning styles and requirements. Niq is clear, thorough and very approachable. All students respond well to his teaching style and he is able to give one-on-one tuition to each student while still maintaining a positive learning environment for the whole class.

In summary, I feel that the New Zealand hairdressing industry is very fortunate to have Niq as a trainer and he is, without doubt, the best candidate for this award."
